Back in March, an LPD officer shot and killed a dog after searching the east side of a house for the 17-year-old son of Sharnick Compton, who reportedly was having multiple domestic disputes the night of the shooting.
The dog was named Opie, a 9-year-old white pit bull belonging to Compton. According to incident reports, the officer fired two warning shots to startle the dog, but Opie continued to bark and run at the officer. The officer, unable to verify if the dog was on a leash, fired two more shots and hit the dog in the left shoulder.
Compton claims that Opie was on a 10-foot leash and testifies the shooting was unjust. Now, Compton is planning a lawsuit on the city for $250,000 for the incident.
An internal police investigation found the officer innocent of violating department protocol.
Compton was quoted by investigators that her dog was not barking and was not a threat. At the time of the shooting, she was inside her house talking to another officer when she heard the four gunshots from around the corner of the house.
“He didn’t deserve to die the way he died,” Compton states, “It’s a nightmare. . . I just don’t understand. I want answers.”
