Luna stays with Schlake throughout the day and many Spanish students will get used to her in the classroom this year. In an interview Schlake explained how Luna spends most of the day in the classroom walking around but spends some time in her kennel also. She is also able to go out in the halls during passing period. If she cannot be with Schlake she goes to another designated classroom. Ms.Hilzer, Mrs.Janssen, and Ms.Howell are teachers that Luna frequents. Besides just spending time in the classroom, Luna also sometimes runs passes with the office TA’s and the counseling center student ambassadors.
Although she spends time in the classroom with Schlake she also is able to visit other classes. Students absolutely love Luna. She howls along with the pledge in the morning and is said to howl to encourage the kids. In a writing prompt last year about Luna, a student wrote about Luna and her dog boyfriend named Beethoven.
The process of being certified is long and Luna will be certified under a Novice Rally Obedience title by the end of the year. Schlake is a member at the Greater Lincoln Obedience Club where the pair has completed over 20 classes and will get their certificate once the process is completed.
When asked about the difference between a therapy dog and assistance or service dogs, Schlake provided a very good answer. The difference is that Luna, as a therapy dog, gets to come to school to hang out with student and staff to make their day a little bit better, while service dogs are highly trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Luna is not able to go into restaurants or stores, but is able to visit schools, hospitals, and nursing homes, if she was invited and is wearing her vest, which signifies that she is working.
