There is no doubt texting and driving is one of the most current and still developing problems in the world. According to The National Safety Council texting and driving is the cause of 1.6 million car accidents each year. More than 9 people die each day as a result of texting and driving and over one thousand more are injured. That’s over thirty percent of the car accidents in the United States.
There are many mixed opinions on the topic of texting and driving. As one anonymous teen driver states, “It’s nothing to me. I do it, and it’s okay as long as you know what you’re doing.” On the other hand some teen drivers feel the complete opposite, “It is never okay to use your phone. Your phone should be turned off and away when you are driving.” Only 2% of people who admit to texting and driving claim they do not have an opinion on texting and driving.
Many people associate texting and driving with teens or young beginning drivers. Over 51% of people that admit they text and drive were above the age twenty five. 98% of people who admitted to texting and driving admit they know it’s unsafe but still do it. Forty six states have banned texting and driving, but 4 states still remain a no distracted driving ban state. This is always going to be a developing and current problem in the years ahead.
