According to the International Air Transport Association in 2013 over 3.1 billion people flew. In 2014 the global airline turnover towered over 743 billion dollars.
According to ABC News 1 in 3 people are afraid of flying but over 3 billion people continue to fly. The fear of flying is one of the most common fears within the population. According to The Economist, You have a 1 in 5,371,369 chance of having your airplane go down. One of the most terrifying and unexplained airline incidents occurred in March of 2014 which was the disappearance of Malaysia flight 370 which had 239 passengers and crew on board. Over 2 years later they still have not found the plane which is presumed to be located in the Indian Ocean. Many people were astonished on how a plane with that much technology could just disappear. People still question, is it safe to fly?
According to The Guardian, in 2012 there was a reported 414 fatalities from commercial airline incidents. In 2013 there were a total of 210 fatalities from commercial airline incidents. Even though we are hearing about more plane crashes, the fatalities are decreasing. The deadliest year in aviation history was 2010, with a reported 94 accidents and a total of 786 fatalities.
As the years go on airline ticket prices seem to keep increasing. Airlines with the least amount of reported incidents tend to have a higher cost as to for example a ticket on Malaysia Airlines. Should you have to pay to insure your safety? Personally when I purchase my plane tickets I only flight the safest airlines. After the disappearance of Malaysia flight 370 the company took a $137.8 million dollar loss According to TIME. The question still stands, are you paying for your safety?
