High school works in the same fashion as bell curve. A bell curve starts at a low point then begins to incline and then ends in a decline to the original point. In high school, freshman year is easy can just be floated through, then a sharp incline occurs during sophomore and junior year. Finally senior year comes around and the sharp decline occurs, this leaves the difficulty at about the same as freshmen year. The easiness of senior year combined with the rebellious spirit of seniors leads to a very common illness known as senioritis. Senioritis spawns from a lack of motivation, disdain for school, and stress of college.
Senioritis infects millions of seniors across the United States. By the time students reach senior year, they are very worn out. High school is challenging, High school is filled to the brink with homework, test, and extra curricular activities. Three years straight of these challenges exhausts seniors. Seniors simply lose motivation; coming to school begins to feel more like chore rather than a necessity.Seniors literally step foot into their hellish nightmare known as class and think to themselves “I’ve made huge mistake.”.Moise Lutmba, a senior at Lincoln Northeast, is a prime example of a student that is simply tired of school. Moise played football, took AP classes, and worked a job during a majority of his high school career. When asked about his motivation ,Moise said “I’m just not very motivated. I don’t want to come to school.” This is a trend among seniors at Lincoln Northeast, when a portion of the current senior class was polled, a majority of them displayed a lack of motivation .So can seniors retain their motivation in their final year. According to seasoned teacher Jeff Brooks there is a way. Mr. Brooks recommends engagement, “ get excited and intellectually curious.” Mr.Brooks believes that the best way to avoid a loss of motivation during senior year is to focus on classes that bring enjoyment. This would allow students to find a level of enjoyment in classes and keep them engaged in classes.
After three years ,of what feels likeendless school work, students begin to dislike school. High school seniors are fed up with all the little and big things that come with high school. Whether it be the crowded hallways and or annoying freshmen. It could even be the idea of taking another test, A test may trigger a student with senioritis and cause serious emotional damage.Senior’s simply dislike the idea of coming to school and enduring everyday. According to a senior, that wishes to remain anonymous “I hate school! I only come because my parents force me to.” This strong dislike for school causes many seniors to come down with senioritis. And this phenomenon according Mr. Brooks “gets worse as time goes on.” Seniors view school as a chore and refuse to continue to work if they are not being forced to . The choice is very simple. How can seniors avoid this growing hatred during school? It’s the same as curing a lack of motivation. Seniors should only take classes that directly interest them. The more seniors enjoy their classes the less likely they will be to daydream throughout the day.
College is very intimidating for high school seniors, as it should be. Deciding where to go to college and focusing on applying and the ACT it’s all a lot of stress.Deciding which college to go in debt to can prematurely induce senioritis. The reason this causes an increase in the number of seniors that get infected with senioritis, is that high school time is competing with time that could be used focusing on college. Going to a Team Sports class is just slightly less important than applying to college. Seniors simply decide to focus their attention on college rather than high school. This situation can easily be resolved. The easiest resolution is to incorporate college work into high school. School administration should place high school seniors into a college workshop class that allows seniors an entire period to focus on college. This class can consist of ACT studying, college applications, and narrowing down college options. This would give high school seniors less of an excuse to ignore school.
Senioritis is a seriously contagious virus that infects millions of seniors each year. This virus strikes fear in the hearts of both parents and teachers. This virus kills GPAs and class rank in only a year. With only a dollar a day we can stop senior skipping and save millions of students from the cruel consequences that come with skipping school. A lack of motivation, disdain for school, and stress of college are common warning signs of the senioritis beginning to kick in. As community we can help stop the senioritis virus from infecting our loved ones.
