The time it takes to get from class to class is a time that could be used for various things like going to your locker or going to the bathroom. But why do we have 5 minutes and not 3 or 7?
“5 minutes to get from class to class is more than enough time for every student.” Mr.Runyan, assistant principal of Northeast high school says. “Sometimes I think 5 minutes could actually play in for some students tardiness because they’re standing around talking rather than just going to class. But at the same time we also know that the 5 minutes also allows students to go to their lockers, use the restroom and touch base with a friend if need be.”
If we were to change the amount of passing time we as a school would have to consider where our other time is being spent.
“If we had 4 minutes instead, there would be more class time. Whatever we would take out of passing time would go into class time. It wouldn’t mean we would get out of school early” Mr.Runyan says.
So what’s the deal with high schools having different passing times than middle schools?
“One is their schools aren’t big. Two there are not as many students. Three I think a lot of the middle schools work in quadrants. They aren’t traveling all over the building” Mr.Runyan says. “I think since we’re the smallest high school in the district, we could get away with cutting a minute off and being at 4.”
We should all use our time efficiently so no one is late to class and can get a full learning experience without worrying about detentions or phone calls home.
