With 70% of users binge-watching their shows, Netflix has become one of the most well-known sources of entertainment in today’s society. The company was started in 1997 by two entrepreneurs, Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. Their company specialized in DVD by mail when the business first took off. It was not until 2013 that their company added television production and an online aspect to their services and strayed away from the DVD rental service.
Over the past few years, Netflix has expanded on a global scale. After making their services available in 2010 to Canada, they have grown to establish a streaming service in over 190 countries. Netflix keeps expanding, and with their recent release of 126 films/series in 2016, they do not intend to slow their pace. Along with their increased production of films/TV shows, Netflix has become enormously popular on a global scale. Over 93 million citizens from around the world have subscribed to Netflix, including 49 million subscribers coming from the US.
A survey was conducted of 150 LNE students and teachers. 81% of those surveyed said they have subscribed to Netflix. The top genres that the students/teachers picked were Comedy (116 votes), Action (79 votes), Drama (68 votes), Horror (65 votes), and Sci-Fi/Fantasy (44 votes). A multitude of answers were also received about the shows people liked to watch. The top show from the survey was Grey’s Anatomy with 25 votes. What makes this show so interesting and fun to watch is its dramatic/romantic nature, but also the science that goes along with it and the fact that many of the shows are filmed in a real life medical setting.
There was a tie for the second most picked show between The Office and Shameless, both with 19 votes. With both shows being comedies, this reflects what genre most students appreciate at LNE. The Office is a TV series about a paper company, Dunder Mifflin, and the daily lives of the employees who work there. Shameless is a show about the Gallagher family. This family of seven includes an alcoholic father and a daughter who is overwhelmed trying to care for her five brothers and sisters. Each episode expands on their daily life in the projects of Chicago and is a new story about a situation one of the Gallagher children gets into.
Coming into fourth place is One Tree Hill with 17 votes. Even though the show ended in 2012, it continues to stay a “fan favorite” in the Northeast community. One Tree Hill is a show about the lives of a few high school students from a town in North Carolina. Two main characters in this series are Nathan and Lucas Scott. The plot is focused around what they go through throughout their high school career.
Last but not least, Orange is the New Black came in 5th place with 16 votes. Orange is the New Black is a story about Piper Chapman, a girl who was sent to prison for her involvement in drug dealing with her long time girlfriend. It reflects on what she goes through on a daily basis and the situations she puts herself in throughout the series. With Orange is the New Black being the most popular Netflix show in Nebraska, it is not surprising that this show was one of the many at the top of the list.
There are so many TV shows out there to watch besides the ones listed in this article. These are just a few that were at the top of the “watch list” for many LNE students and teachers. So, if you want to take a break from your current series, try one of these shows, and you might find a new favorite show!
