1. Squirrel Appreciation Day – January 21
According to the creator of the day, Christy Hargrove, the “Celebration of the event itself is up to the individual or group – anything from putting out extra food for the squirrels to learning something new about the species.” The day is celebrated annually on January 21 and was created on that day in 2001. The creator Christy Hargrove is a wildlife rehabilitator at the Western North Carolina Nature Center. Using #SquirrelAppreciationDay will show your appreciation for the species. Whether one chooses to put out food, observe them in the park, or pick out his/her favorite color, the holiday is one no one will want to miss.
2. National Awkward Moments Day – March 18
Everyone has awkward moments from time to time. There is a day however, to embrace the embarrassment and discomfort of these moments. On March 18, remember all the times you tripped in front of the cute kid, called someone mom or fell up the stairs. Although the origins of National Awkward Moments Day is unknown, many people believe it may have a little something to do with the fact that St. Patrick’s Day is the day before.
3. World Penguin Day – April 25
The World Penguin Day coincides with the annual migration of the penguins northward. Not to be confused with Penguin Awareness Day on January 20. Some people are found watching documentaries or learning something new about penguins. Others wear black and white or even a tuxedo to celebrate the little, fluffy creatures. Some even create penguin jokes. There are around 17 species of penguin, plenty of options to celebrate these cute animals on April 25.
4. International Panic Day – June 18
Not to be confused with International Picnic Day which falls on the same day, International Panic Day is a day for people stressing out about life. Many use this day to get away from their stressors and relax for a day rather than think about all the things that make them panic. Maybe go out and enjoy a picnic rather than panic, since the two fall on the same day.
5. Ugly Truck Day – July 20
Everyone knows that one person who drives the biggest, most obnoxious truck around. This day is just for them and everyone who loves these ugly trucks. Many people in Texas will enjoy this since Texas is the most popular state for pickup trucks. This day is to cherish all the old, nasty trucks rather than the new shiny ones of city slickers. Several ugly truck owners use this day to have an Ugly Truck Contest. The origin of the day is unknown. It is most likely lost in time on the dirt, back roads of Texas.
6. National I Love My Feet Day – August 17
Feet – love them or hate them, every year on August 17 people celebrate National I Love My Feet Day. This day is set aside to practice good foot care and understand the importance of feet. The day was created by Carolyn D. Jenkins in May 2015. 75% of adults have a foot problem. Many of these problems are due to improper foot wear. Take time on this day to see a doctor and visit a shoe store to find well fitting shoes. No matter your opinion on them, everyone has feet that need cared for.
7. National One Hit Wonder Day – September 25
Everyone loves “Mickey” by Toni Basil, “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas and “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, all one hit wonders that lived on for a short period of time. Everyone was caught singing them whether they wanted to or not. A few months later and no one heard from the artist again. One hit wonders are everywhere and come up all the time. On September 25 enjoy all the one hit wonders of the past. The origin of the day is unknown, just like most of the artists now. Turn up the music and jam out to the best one hit wonders.
8. National Hermit Day – October 29
There are days when the world seems to be too hard to deal with. Alone time is important and sometimes extremely needed. A hermit is defined as person who lives, to some degree, in seclusion from society. National Hermit Day on October 29 is the perfect day for this. On National Hermit Day take time to be alone and simply shut out the world for a day. Stay off your phone and any electronics. October 29 is the day of St. Colman’s death. It is believed the day was created to honor his death in 632 A.D. in Ireland. He lived alone for 7 years in the Burren Forest in a cave. Use this day to honor his death and spend time alone.
9. National Sock Day – December 4
Pair of Thieves, a clothing company, founded the National Sock Day. They made the day in honor of two historical musicals that took place on this day. It made the National Day Calendar in October 2016. The holiday goes along with National No Sock Day on May 8 and National Lost Sock Day on May 9. National Sock Day celebrates those pairs of socks who are still with their mate and have not been eaten by the dryer. Knee high socks, fuzzy socks, or just plain socks – everyone owns them. Go out and buy a new pair to celebrate this day.
10. Bathtub Party Day – December 5
Bathtub Party Day was created by Thomas and Ruth Roy. The holiday is made to take a break from the ordinary, daily shower and relax in a bathtub. Whether you relax by candlelight, rose petals or with your favorite bath bomb, this day is the perfect day to relax. Spend the day in peace, feeling fresh, carefree and calm.
