With Summer coming up, it is important to start planning days to go out and have some fun. Going to the movie theater is one of the best ways to do that. There are many good movies coming out this summer, but these ones are particularly noteworthy.  

May 26 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

This movie is the fifth in its series. If you’ve never seen any of these films, it follows a pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, and the adventures he embarks on. In this movie, Captain Jack Sparrow finds himself in a pickle when deadly ghost pirates led by his old enemy, Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate, including him. His only hope lies with the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that gives its possessor total control over the sea, which he must find before it is too late.

June 2 – Wonder Woman

When people think of DC, they typically think of Superman and Batman, but there is a new superhero in town, and she is planning to take the world by storm. In the new movie, Wonder Woman, we are taken back to before Wonder Woman was the superhero she is. Before Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. She was raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on the shore and tells of a conflict raising on the outside world. Diana leaves her home, believing she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in the war to end all wars, Diana begins to discover her full powers and destiny.

June 16 – Cars 3

In this trilogy, you follow the story of a race car named, Lightning McQueen and his journey to the top of the racing world. In the third film of this series, McQueen is blindsided by a new generation of racers, and is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back on top, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected twists and turns.

June 21 – Transformers: The Last Knight

In Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth in the series, Optimus Prime journeys back to Cybertron, his home planet. When he finds it, he discovers it is now a dead planet, which he comes to find he was responsible for killing. He finds a way to bring his home planet back to life, but that requires an artifact, which lies back on Earth. In his absence, a war broke out between the human race and the Transformers. In order to save the world, Cade Yeager, from Transformers: Age of Extinction, forms an alliance with Bumblebee, an English lord, and an Oxford professor to learn why the Transformers keep returning to Earth.

June 30 – Despicable Me 3

In this third installment of the Despicable Me trilogy, Gru meets his long-lost charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother, Dru. Dru wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist to steal the diamond taken by Balthazar Bratt, a former star who has grown up to become obsessed with a character he played in the ‘80s.

July 7 – Spider-Man: Homecoming

In this new rendition of Spider-Man, we pick up after he is seen in Captain America: Civil War. He has gone back home to be with Aunt May, and is now under the watchful eye of Tony Stark/Iron Man. They toy with the idea of Peter Parker/Spider-Man joining the Avengers, but Stark doesn’t believe he would make a good fit. In order to prove he is more than your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, he decides to go after the new villain that emerges, Vulture. Doing this puts everything Peter holds most important will be threatened.

July 28 – The Emoji Movie

This may not seem like the most ideal movie, but it will probably be one for the books. This star-packed movie takes place in a city called Textopolis, a bustling city inside your phone where your favorite emojis live. This film follows an emoji named, Gene, an outgoing emoji with ability to have multiple facial expressions, while every other emoji only has one. In an effort to become normal, he enlists the help of his best friend Hi-5 and the notorious code breaker emoji, Jailbreak. When great danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis lies with these three unlikely friends who must save the phone before it is deleted forever.

August 11 – Annabelle: Creation

This horror flick shows the origins of the possessed doll, Annabelle. The story is focused more around a dollmaker and his wife, whose daughter passed away twenty years earlier. They decide to open their home to a nun and several girls from an orphanage that has been closed. Despite having goodness in their hearts, their lives began to change when the dollmaker’s possessed doll, Annabelle, sets her sights on a young girl named Janice.

September 8 – IT

Despite that this movie comes out in the fall, this remake of the 1990 horror flick is a noteworthy movie nonetheless. This film takes place in the town Derry, Maine, after recent cases of local children disappearing begin to arise. The film follows a group of seven friends dubbed “The Losers’ Club” in the summer of 1989 and their discovery and scary encounters of a shape-shifting demonic entity, who takes the form of an evil clown who targets children, leaving behind their bloody remains. It is known to return every 27 years and preys on your own personal fears.

The selection for this summer’s new movies is very broad in genre. Whether you are looking for a science fiction superhero movie, an animated children’s movie, or a horror movie with demonic clowns, you will never truly have a poor choice. So turn your calendars to these days and make sure you find time to enjoy this selection of movies for summer 2017.
