The St. Louis Rams, now called the Los Angeles Rams, have been approved by the NFL to relocate to the city of Los Angeles, California, toward the end of 2019. They will be moving to the site of the old Hollywood Park racetrack location in Inglewood, which is about ten miles downtown from L.A., and they may not be alone. The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders had also filled out applications to relocate to a different stadium in Carson, California. However, they did not receive enough votes to relocate. Now the Chargers have a one year option to join the Rams and share a stadium in Inglewood. If the Chargers decline this opportunity, the Raiders will have the chance to move to Inglewood and share a stadium with the Rams.
The Rams were based in Los Angeles from 1946 to 1994, and they will now be temporarily playing at the Los Angeles Coliseum until the new stadium is ready for play. Throughout the 49 seasons in L.A., the Rams made 21 playoff appearances, including winning the 1951 NFL Championship, which is now known as the Super Bowl. The expense to move an NFL team costs approximately 550 million. In the case of the Rams, they will have to either pay it all at once or set up a payment plan of 64 million per year until all of their dues are paid.
