Field Trips are the most anticipated and most dreaded moment of a student’s time in school. There is a lot of speculation whether or not field trips are beneficial to a student’s learning. Having field trips means it could have positive aspects to it by helping a student see what they’re learning about in person. Or field trips may have a negative aspect because, field trips do cost much more money than expected so some students can’t experience what their school subject is about.
Personally, I feel that field trips are not as beneficial as they should be mostly when you’re in highschool. Some field trips in high school will only be a specific class taken while other classes, have to stay in class and resume learning. Going on field trips may take a whole day which means you have to catch up with your other school work for other classes. In some cases, field trips may get out of hand by dealing with bad behavior of your peers. “Students may be tempted to wander away from the group, misbehave on the bus or become loud at a museum,” USA Today said.
On the other hand, field trips do come in handy for educational purposes. “Schools gladly endured the expense and disruption of providing field trips because they saw these experiences as central to their educational mission: schools exist not only to provide economically useful skills in numeracy and literacy, but also to produce civilized young men and women who would appreciate the arts and culture,” By Greene, Kisida and Bowen. Being in school and just sitting and listening what your teacher’s telling you, is not as fun as going outside of school and learning more of what your school subject’s topic is about.
Most teachers think field trips are beneficial and I even interviewed my World History teacher, Mr. Hunt to get the proof. “How do you feel about school field trips?” I asked. “I think they’re a good experience for the students to kinda get out of the classroom and learn about things that are out of the school walls” Mr. Hunt replied. “Do you think students learn more of what they’re learning about in person or not?” I questioned. “Definitely, yeah I think visual part carries a lot more weight than sometimes just listening okay, eyes process and yeah I think it’s good” Mr. Hunt replied. “At times field trips do cost more money than expected, do you feel like the money spent on field trips should be spent more on school supplies” I said. “No, I don’t think you could experience the same stuff, I think you have to go out uh and get that experience without spending the money on books and physical part of seeing is a lot better” Mr. Hunt replied.
Field trips have many aspects to it, they may seem boring or be beneficial for seeing what you’re learning about in person. Either way, you get something out of the experience that could change your mind of how you see things your subject topic is about. I personally don’t enjoy field trips but, everyone has their own opinion such as my World History teacher Mr. Hunt, who thinks that field trips could be an experience to remember. Field trips are a part of a student’s time in school that may or may not be enjoyable but always get something out of the experience.
