A seventeen-year old boy, Jaden Smith, got his fame for being the son of Will and Jada Smith. Jaden broke the movie charts with his movie, The Karate Kid, and the music charts with his duet featuring Justin Bieber. Recently, the teenage boy has turned away from acting and has entered into the fashion realm. Louis Vuitton announced Jaden Smith as the new face of their womenswear line starting 2016 off with a bang. With Jaden being a male starring in womenswear, this has sparked a controversy, receiving both praise and hate.
Jaden Smith a fan of anti-gender stereotypes didn’t hesitate to take the role of the face of Louis Vuitton’s womenswear. The teenager gathered up a lot of talk when he wore a dress to his prom and skirts to music festivals, so dressing in these common “girl” clothes was not much of a stretch for him.
Jaden gained a lot of compliments for his goal of breaking down gender barriers. One LNE student named Tommy Nguyen said, “It is his choice and no one should judge him.”
While he received a lot of love Jaden Smith also acquired backlash when the announcement was given. Many not agreeing that he is breaking any barriers for the sexes, just putting more up. Paula Faris read a tweet on The View didn’t agree with the title saying, “Then don’t call it womenswear…call it everyone’s wear.” Many of The View cast members went on to say that nothing about Jaden Smith is making them want to purchase the outfit.
Much of the support is cancelling out the hate for him. Not only is his support coming from thousands of tweets, it is also coming from his family. His sister, Willow Smith, posted an Instagram photo of Jaden in a Louis Vuitton dress captioned, “Males and females are put into boxes of expectation when we are born. As we grow we start to raise the damages that those expectations cause to our spiritual and emotional understanding of ourselves and life.” Jaden is continuing through the hate with the help of all his supporters as he proudly models for Louis Vuitton.
