The school dress code is a greater controversy than people think.
According to Laura Bates from Women Magazine, high school students in Chicago planned a “Show Your Shoulders” protest in response to a dress code that won’t allow students to bare their shoulders. In a school in Ohio students got together to protest after one girl got disciplined for not wearing a bra. Yoga pants were banned in Cape Cod to make sure the male students weren’t getting distracted. Yoga pants and leggings were banned in West Point, and Auburn too. How distracted were the females when getting kicked out of class to change clothes? Dress code is a big deal.
As stated by Women Magazine, “In Woodford County, Kentucky parent Stacie Dunn was shocked to find out that her daughter Stephanie Hughes was called to the principal’s office on the first day of school because she revealed her collarbones. Dunn took to facebook to complain, writing: ““Parents are being called away from their important jobs and students are missing important class time.”” Her post was shared more than 45,000 times.”
In Mr. Kurt Glathar’s 12 years of being a part of Northeast, there has been talk about uniforms. Glathar says he’s not too into the uniforms because students can’t express themselves. He states, “Uniforms eliminate individuality”. “Although each student is different, there’s standards when in a community environment.”
There’s a reason for dress code. You can’t come to school representing inappropriate behavior, drugs, gangs, nor sexual contact. Glathar mentioned that when a female has an inch strap, it’s more likely that there will be a higher front and closed back. Spaghetti straps are more open, and show more skin.
When interviewing sophomore, Ayak Ayaj, she believes women should be comfortable in their skin. Ayaj says there’s pros and cons to having uniforms. “School is for education not revealing bodies.” Sophomore, Diamond Bush states that she understands why schools would have uniforms. “They’d help with antibullying of other students and their clothing because some can’t afford nice clothing. Other students wouldn’t be able to show off their nice clothes or express their fashion desires. Student’s wouldn’t have a choice but to wear what is provided. I believe we have dress codes to stop both females and males from wearing inappropriate slangs or signs. These types of clothing influence bad ideas. Also, so females wouldn’t wear too short of clothing to the limit of showing their private parts. There’s a difference in wearing shorts because it’s hot and because people want to show themselves.” When interviewing freshman, Malcolm Whitlow, he stated that dress codes would be bad because people couldn’t express themselves through clothing.
