On the UNL campus there was a volunteer group of students formed in 2008 called The Husker Cats. The Husker Cats help minimize the feral cat population. Every morning they go feed the cats around the campus with a special diet cat food that helps with their digestive system. They also give them fresh water to drink daily.
The Husker Cats go through a process called trap, bag, release (TNR). They capture the feral cats and spay or neuter them, then release them back onto the campus. This is done in order to help control the cat population. They always nip the left ear of the cat so they know that it has been spayed or neutered. This process is extremely useful when trying to keep the feral cat population down.
During the mid-summers cats are very hot so they attempt to seek shelter to cool off. one of the students saw this and decided to do something about it. he used his own money to make wooden boxes, that have roofs, small doors, and big white Husker Cats logos on the sides. These homes will provide some shelter for these feral cats. At times there will be a certain lucky feral cat that will get adopted.
To adopt a cat one first must go fill out an online application on The Cat House website. The individual must be 19 or older to fill out the application. If The Husker Cats believe an individual is qualified to adopt a cat, he/she can go pick up the new pet at The Cat House located on 3633 O Street.Visit huskercats.org if you would like to volunteer or donate to this cause.
