2015 not only marks a bad year for the Huskers’s record, it also marks the first year of Coach Mike Riley’s career at Nebraska. There were many close defeats. All seven losses combined to create a total of thirty-one points according to the Huskers’s website.
Many people wonder how the Cornhuskers made a bowl game with a record of 5-7. But according to SB Nation, there were not enough teams with six wins to fill all 41 bowl games. Because there are only 75 bowl-eligible teams, there was a guarantee that two teams with only five wins are going to be able to participate.
So how did the Huskers get chosen out of all the teams? In 2012, the NCAA announced a contingency plan that would allow teams with a 5-7 record to participate in a bowl game if they were in the top five in Academic Progress Rate (APR). The Cornhuskers came in first which is why they were first picked for a bowl game.
The Huskers will play UCLA in the Foster Farms Bowl on December 26. Out of all 41 bowl games, the Big Ten Network’s reporter Tom Dienhart has ranked the Foster Farms Bowl as 23rd for best game potential.
The win against Michigan State, who was undefeated and went to win the Big Ten Championship, was one of the biggest highlights of the season. Junior Jordan Westerkamp is also on the verge of breaking two school records. Which are most receiver catches in a season and career receptions. The bowl game will give Westerkamp one last opportunity to show what he has in hopes to get on the Hall of Fame with all the greats.
